NCODE provides an interactive environment for exploring Opusmodus functions, adjusting their parameters and developing musical material through immediate experimentation.

Create variables, evaluate compositional processes and combine the results into larger musical structures. NCODE remains connected to OMN, playback and notation, allowing material developed interactively to become part of a complete Opusmodus composition.

NCODE WORKFLOW

Explore Functions and Preserve Musical Results

The Function and Variables window is the principal workspace for developing musical material in NCODE. Select an Opusmodus function, enter its required and optional parameters through organised fields, and evaluate different settings without writing every expression directly in Lisp. Useful results can be stored as named variables together with their originating functions and parameters. Recall, modify and combine this material throughout the session, then assign the resulting OMN variables to instruments when constructing a complete score.

Define

Select a function and enter its arguments through clearly organised parameter fields.

Evaluate

Test different settings immediately and inspect the musical results.

Preserve and Reuse

Save results as named variables that can be recalled, modified and combined.

Build the Score

Assign OMN variables to instruments and define the notation and playback settings for the composition.

VARIABLES AND SESSION HISTORY

Organise and Reuse Musical Materials

Every result preserved in NCODE becomes part of the current session history. Variables can contain numbers, lengths, pitches, velocities, articulations or complete OMN event sequences.

The history records each variable together with information about its type, generating function and size. Selecting an entry restores its function and parameter settings, allowing the material to be examined, modified or used in another compositional process.

Filter

Display variables by musical type, including pitches, lengths, velocities, articulations and OMN events.

Inspect

View the variable’s name, type, generating function, size and operational category.

Reuse

Insert stored variables into new functions or assign OMN variables directly to instruments.

Preserve

Save the complete NCODE session, including its history, variable bindings and score settings, as an .omnc file.

DEF-SCORE

Assemble Musical Materials into a Complete Score

The DEF-SCORE pane brings the musical materials developed in NCODE into a complete score structure. Stored OMN variables can be assigned directly to instruments and organised into the required instrumental layout.

Global score settings, staff organisation and playback parameters remain accessible in one interface. The resulting score can be inspected as notation, auditioned through the MIDI Player or used in a live-coding workflow.

Set the Score Defaults

Define the score name, title information, key signature, time signature, tempo and other global settings.

Organise the Layout

Create and arrange instrumental staves, groups, names and abbreviations.

Assign Musical Material

Connect stored OMN variables to individual instruments and specify their playback settings.

Preview the Result

Open the generated notation, listen through the MIDI Player or continue developing the score through live coding.
