EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

Opusmodus for Music Education and Research

Opusmodus provides an integrated environment for teaching composition, musical programming and algorithmic thinking. The system supports structured demonstrations, reproducible experiments, symbolic music analysis and the development of custom compositional models. Tutorials, documentation, Function Systems and examples can be found in the Assistant navigator.

COMPOSITION EDUCATION

Teach Musical Thinking Through Code

In Opusmodus, pitch, duration, dynamics and articulation are available as distinct musical parameters. Each can be generated or transformed independently, or combined within a single OMN structure. This makes it possible to preserve one dimension while changing another, map information between parameters and coordinate musical relationships across several voices or instruments.

Represent

Describe pitch, rhythm, dynamics and articulation through OMN.

Experiment

Change parameters, evaluate alternatives and compare audible results.

Analyse

Examine musical structures through notation, measurements, plots and graphs.

Compose

Develop selected material into complete playable and notated works.

TEACHING AND CURRICULUM

Support Progressive Composition Study

Opusmodus can support a structured progression from musical fundamentals to advanced computational composition. Educators can adapt its tutorials, examples and functions to individual lessons, complete courses, workshops and independent projects. Students can begin with small, clearly audible exercises and gradually combine musical parameters, compositional methods and analytical tools into complete works. Because code, notation, playback and visualisation remain connected, every stage can be demonstrated, tested and discussed.

Foundations

Study OMN, pitch, rhythm, dynamics, articulation, notation and playback through practical musical examples.

Composition Methods

Explore generative, parametric, stochastic and rule-based processes alongside harmony, counterpoint and formal design.

Analysis and Reflection

Measure and compare musical structures using Bar-by-bar analysis, plots, graphs and analytical profiles.

Independent Projects

Develop complete compositions, document creative processes and create reusable personal functions, libraries and compositional systems.

RESEARCH AND COMPUTATIONAL MUSICOLOGY

Examine Musical Structures Through Reproducible Methods

Opusmodus provides researchers with a programmable environment for examining symbolic musical information, testing compositional models and investigating relationships within complete scores or selected musical parameters.

Pitch, rhythm, intervals, harmony, dynamics, density, recurrence and form can be measured through analytical functions and presented as data, plots, graphs and specialised profiles. Because every process is expressed through code, analyses can be repeated, modified, compared and shared.

Analyse

Extract precise information from musical passages, complete scores and MusicXML imports.

Model

Develop and test rule-based, generative, stochastic and mathematical representations of musical processes.

Visualise

Display patterns, distributions and structural relationships through plots, graphs and analytical profiles.

Reproduce and Share

Preserve methods as executable code so that research processes can be verified, adapted and extended.
